This Conservative Council certainly has a sense of humour.
Since they retained control of Welwyn Hatfield Council back in May, they’ve been having a laugh—at your expense.
The first thing they did once they were sat in their comfy new chairs in the brand new Council Chamber you paid for, was give themselves (Conservative Councillors) pay rises of up to 58%. Labour voted to block this but we were over-ruled by just a handful of votes.
Soon after that, the Conservatives again voted to cut in work social security payments for the poorest in our community struggling to make ends meet. Labour said this was no way to treat struggling families working hard but again they voted it through.
In the very same meeting, every single Conservative Councillor voted against Labour’s suggestion that the Council write to the Government to simply raise concerns over the continued pressure on local finances.
Of course, like all local authorities, Welwyn Hatfield Council has faced huge cuts to its funding by the Tory government with more on the way.
And therein you learn all you need to know about Welwyn Hatfield Conservative Party.
They’ll wring their hands and talk about how difficult it all is when making cuts that harm the poorest or ask residents to pay for what they thought they already we’re,
But none of this matters when it came to handing themselves pay-rises, or refusing to write to their own Government (as other Conservative Councils have done).
You may have received leaflets from these Conservatives. They like to talk what a good job they’re doing with your money. They don’t mention any of this though, and there is precious little mention of the 300 million pounds Welwyn Hatfield Council borrowed and gave to the Coalition Government in 2011.
Bursting the myth that the Conservatives are financially prudent is one thing, but we want to be absolutely clear to you. Labour will vote against any and all attempts to charge residents to have their bins picked up.
It makes no sense at all, its morally wrong. It could end up costing more in reduced recycling and landfill rates, and is bad for our local environment.
This ill thought and ridiculous idea need to be put in the bin and taken far far away.
